The Good Life, the next game from Deadly Premonition and D4 director Hidetaka ‘Swery’ Suehiro, has returned to crowdfunding.
The Good Life initially launched a crowdfunding campaign on Fig last year, but sadly couldn’t raise the required amount in time. Creator Hidetaka ‘Swery’ Suehiro said at the time that he’s gonna give it another go, only it would be on Kickstarter.
Well, the Kickstarter campaign for The Good Life is now live. The game needs to raise $643,744 in the next 38 days. This is already less than the $1.5 million the Fig campaign was asking for.
The Good Life is a detective story about a small British town called Rainy Woods, whose residents turn into cats and dogs once a month. This so called happiest town in the world is visited by the game’s protagonist, Naomi, who must find the root behind this mystery.
Naomi takes a job in Rainy Woods to pay off her debts, which you do by taking pictures and hoping they get enough likes on the game’s version of Instagram. You can also do other part-time jobs.
The game is being developed for PC, and PS4, with a release target of Q3 2019. Panzer Dragoon and Phantom Dust creator Yukio Futatsugi is leading development at Swery’s White Owls studio, who’s writing and directing.
The campaign page describes it as a “daily life RPG” which probably means you’ll be tending to tasks other than main point. The pitch video already looks a lot better than the one shown with the Fig campaign.
At the time of writing, the game has raised close to $130,000 from 2,941 backers. The Kickstarter is clear, however, that the target is only a portion of the game’s development budget.
The rest will, hopefully, come from publishing partners. Having a successful campaign aids the studio in its quest to get the game made, so the idea is to show there’s enough interest while spending baker money on realising the game’s original vision without compromise or fear of publisher pressure.
