Spyro Reignited Trilogy’s lack of subtitles frustrates players, Activision’s response makes it worse

Spyro Reignited Trilogy is woefully lacking subtitles, and Activision’s response has not gone down well with the community.

Activision’s response to players’ disappointment at discovering that Spyro Reignited Trilogy doesn’t feature subtitles is essentially a resounding “meh.”

While the game has subs for NPC conversations, PlayStationLifestyle reports (via GamePitt) that they’re completely missing from story cutscences.

Activision released a statement after being contacted by GamePitt, saying that while “the studio and Activision care about the fans’ experience especially with respect to accessibility for people with different abilities,” ultimately “there were certain decisions that needed to be made throughout the process” which has led to the no cutscene subs situation we find ourselves in now.

Last year’s Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy similarly suffered with a lack of subtitles, which still haven’t been added almost a year and a half post-launch, despite criticism from the community.

Accessibility in video games is something devs and publishers should be on the ball with, and although Activision has said it “will evaluate [the situation] going forward,” if it hasn’t managed to pull its finger out with Crash, we’ll see how Spyro fares.

The company’s full statement is below:

“When Toys For Bob set out to make an awesome game collection, there were certain decisions that needed to be made throughout the process. The team remained committed to keep the integrity and legacy of Spyro that fans remembered intact.

“The game was built from the ground up using a new engine for the team (Unreal 4), and was localized in languages that had not previously been attempted by the studio.

“While there’s no industry standard for subtitles, the studio and Activision care about the fans’ experience especially with respect to accessibility for people with different abilities, and will evaluate going forward.”

Spyro Reignited Trilogy launched for PS4 and Xbox One last week and was fairly well-received. You can check out the scores in our review round-up right here.
