Resident Evil 2 shipped 3 million copies in its first week

Capcom’s survival horror remake is on track to recreate Resident Evil 7’s success.

Resident Evil 2 launched last week, topping the UK charts 20 years after accomplishing the very same feat, and Capcom has revealed that the title has shipped 3 million copies in its first week.

Resident Evil 7 managed to ship 3 million units within three days of its release, followed by another 500,000 just two weeks later. The title has sold a total of 6 million copies, and Capcom says it “looks to achieve similar, long-term sales for Resident Evil 2 as well.”

The franchise as a whole has sold 88 million units since Resident Evil kicked things off in 1996, while the original Resident Evil 2 sold 4.96 million units.

While neither title has matched the success of Monster Hunter World, which shipped 5 million units in three days and went on to become Capcom’s best-selling game ever, the numbers are still impressive.

Resident Evil 2 is getting a free update next month with The Ghost Survivors DLC that lets players take the role of three characters who are dead in the official canon, in “what if” scenarios that sees them alive and well, and trying to escape Raccoon City.

The content will be available to download on February 15.
