Valve to replace SteamSpy with its own “more accurate and more useful” solution

Valve has announced that it’s working on its own alternative to Steam Spy, that will be “something better” than the analytics site.

Back in April, Valve made some big changes to user privacy settings on Steam that resulted in one of the most useful data tools being inoperable, but now the company is looking into making its own alternative that will be “something better.”

Valve head of business development, Jan-Peter Ewert, was asked about the company’s plans to make analytical tools like Steam Spy available for developers at the Russian White Nights game industry conference, reports PCGamesN.

“Our general approach has always been to provide open APIs so that when we don’t offer the amount of tools that we should, the community can step in,” he explained.

That was the hole that Steam Spy filled until the recent privacy changes, although Ewert added that the data tool “had a broad variance in how accurate it was. It was very accurate for some games, it was very inaccurate for some others.”

He went on to explain that Valve is working on its own “new tools and new ways of getting data out of Steam,” to give devs “something better than Steam Spy,” by being “more accurate and more useful”.

In response to the news, Steam Spy creator Sergey Galyonkin tweeted that he is “really looking forward” to Valve’s alternative.
