Red Dead Redemption 2 is the biggest game of the year, and that means it of course has pre-order bonuses including the amazing War Horse – but you won’t be able to nab them straight away.
As Kirk noted in his Red Dead Redemption 2 review, the latest open-world adventure from Rockstar games is a slow starter and the sort of game that takes its sweet time to get up to speed – and that even goes for getting your hands on the pre-order bonus items and the most notable extra for pre-ordering – the War Horse.
How to get the War Horse pre-order bonus in Red Dead Redemption 2
The War Horse is actually one of those pre-order bonuses that’s well worth having, since it’s a great-looking horse with a decent temperament and solid stats. Especially early on in RDR2, it’ll likely be clearly better than any horse you have a chance of buying or finding out in the wild.
In order to get your War Horse, you’ll simply need to progress the main story of RDR2 to a certain point. We don’t want to get into the realm of spoilers, but it’ll happen once you finish Chapter 1 – once you unlock the camp system and also recieve a tutorial about stables.
Once you have a stable, all you need to do is visit the stables. You’ll do this as part of some story missions that teach you all about horses, and you’ll have a choice between a few different horses – some you can buy, some free.
So long as you’ve successfully redeemed your pre-order DLC code that you got for placing a pre-order on Red Dead Redemption 2, you’ll find the War Horse in that list. It’s a trusty grey steed as pictured above, with a white streak down its face. In the menu it’ll be labeled as Ardennes, but you can also double check it by checking its ‘type’ below – it’ll be listed as ‘War’.
How to get other pre-order bonus items in RDR2
The advice about the War Horse is pretty useful, since the same thing applies to the other horses from the more premium versions of the game – the Dapper Black Thoroughbred and the Black Chestnut Thoroughbred are found in the same place from the same point in the story.
If you’ve picked up more premium, high-end versions of the game you might also have other additional items – the Nuevo Paraiso Gunslinger, Blackrose Bounty Hunter and Copperhead Enforcer outfits, plus the Eagle Eye Talisman.
All of these are found at the same point – in Chapter 2, once you have camp available to you. Just head to your wardrobe to change clothes – this is where you’ll find these items.
