Pokemon Go just announced a surprise event, a limited research day, for February 23. Here’s everything you need to know.
While we have the regular monthly Pokemon Go community day events and Pokemon Go Field Research Missions, every now and then a special limited-time event pops up that combines the two – and that’s what Pokemon Go trainers can expect this weekend, when a Limited Research Day focuses on the addition of new gen 3 Pokemon Clamperl and its evolutions Huntail and Gorebyss.
Pokemon Go Clamperl Event: rewards, features and how to catch Clamperl
The Limited Research Day event works a lot like the other monthly spawn-impacting events. It runs on one day over the course of a weekend during a specific three-hour slot that varies depending on your location. During that time, Clamperl will appear in Pokemon Go for the first time as part of a field research quest encounter reward – thus giving you your very first chance to catch one.
All you need to do for a chance to catch water-type Pokemon Clamperl is spin a Pokestop during the event hours to pick up the associated field mission – and then complete that mission. The reward will be an encounter with the new shellfish-like Pokemon, which can then be evolved into Huntail and Gorebyss if you gather enough candy (but there’s a catch – more on this later).
Clamperl that you encounter during the event will all be level 15 and will have between 500 and 550 CP. Once a piece of limited research has been collected it can be completed any time – so if you have some research you don’t complete until after the event, you’ll still be valid for an event spawn of Clamperl even a few days later.
There are other bonuses to the event, too. More water-type Pokemon will appear out in the wild in general, and Stardust gains are doubled for any water-type Pokemon you catch. These effects all last for the duration of the event. Here’s the event timing, so you can plan your weekend accordingly:
Pokemon Go Clamperl Event Start Time & Date
- Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and India: Sat Feb 23 – 10am to 1pm UTC (GMT +0)
- Americas and Greenland: Sat Feb 23 – 11am to 2pm PST (GMT −8)
- Asia-Pacific: Sat Feb 24 – 12pm to 3pm JST (GMT +9)
Keep in mind if you’re busy or have other plans during this time, have no fear – Niantic has already confirmed that Pokemon Go will continue to feature Clamperl as a wild Pokemon encounter after the event has finished – it’ll just have more traditional, typical spawn values. The event is a chance to catch a lot of them and stack up on Clamperl Candy if you’re lucky, however – and due to the way evolution works with this species, you may very well want to do that.
Pokemon Go Clamperl Evolution: how to get Gorebyss and Huntail
Over in the main traditional Pokemon video games, the evolution of Clamperl is determined by the item it’s holding when you trade it to trigger the evolution. Pokemon Go has of course got other Pokemon that can evolve in multiple ways including Eevee Evolution, and it’s been handled in different ways depending on the Pokemon. For Clamperl, it’s random.
Clamperl has two evolutions – Huntail and Gorebyss. Both are still water-type Pokemon, but these evolutions have slightly different styles – Huntail has big ol’ teeth and looks like it’s a hunter that can swallow prey with ease, while Gorebyss is a cute-looking pink Pokemon that seems to take a slightly less brute-force approach to catching its prey.
In Pokemon Go, evolving Clamperl will cost 50 Clamperl Candy. The evolution you get out of Huntail and Gorebyss is completely random… and as trainers who worked to get both of the Wurmple evolutions will know, that might mean the process of getting both Huntail and Gorebyss ends up being a little bit painful for some.
Your best bet for evolving Clamperl is simply to abuse the event hours listed above for the Clamperl event – catch as many of this creature as possible, and each time make use of Pinap Berries to maximize the amount of candy you get with each catch. Those who truly dedicate themselves to the event should be able to get up to 200 or more candy, giving you at least a few shots at getting both Clamperl evolutions.
Remember, if the odds work against you and you fail to get both, Clamperl will still spawn in the wild in Pokemon Go after the event – you’ll just have to keep an eye out for them, as they’ll be much rarer.
